Topic:

Now that the market is driving clients to utilize tax-deferred exchanges again, tax preparers need to ensure they have the skills and worksheets to confidently assist clients with their exchanges. This session will briefly review the basics, discuss the different types of exchanges possible, how to figure basis in the newly acquired property(ies), the rules adopted by California for reporting exchanges, and the changes made by the TCJA of 2018. We will then apply this knowledge by working through example exchanges, including hands-on use of various worksheets to ensure that the transaction is being accurately recorded on Form 8824. At the conclusion of the session, the goal is for you to be able to work the magic of 1031 exchanges for your clients while having another impressive tool to demonstrate your proficiency in what can be an incredibly complex tax reporting situation.
