From the President
The Times They Are A-Changin!

Ain’t that the truth! This past year and a half have been full of change as the pandemic touched and disrupted every aspect of our lives. And now, as we navigate our way back to some sort of normal, we find that everything has changed and is still changing.

Most of us accept intellectually that change is inevitable. Over 2500 years ago, Heraclitus said, There is nothing permanent except change. But simply accepting the inevitability of change isn’t enough. It’s how you react to that change that’s crucial.

I was reminded of a book by Spencer Johnson called Who Moved My Cheese? It’s about two mice and two little people in a maze who look for cheese, find it, and enjoy it. But one day the cheese is gone! The two mice go off looking for more cheese, but the two little people are in denial. One gets angry and says it’s not fair! He decides to wait there until the cheese comes back. The other one eventually works up the courage to go try to find some new cheese. Once he starts moving, his situation instantly gets better. Eventually he finds some new cheese, which the two mice have also found.

The take-aways: Nothing lasts forever. There will always be change, and change is rarely fair. Rather than getting angry or lamenting the loss, learn to embrace the change. Change is not the end of something, but the beginning of something new.

When Michelle Youngblood, a single mother in Illinois, lost her job during the pandemic, she embraced the change and took the chance to start her own business. “It was the best thing that happened to me…catapulting me into doing something I love.”

We often become trapped into doing the same things we have always done, even when they have stopped working as effectively as they once did. Often it takes an outward jolt to shake us out of that rut.

Remember when the IRS mandated e-filing for preparers that filed over 50 returns? There was a lot of grumbling, but we had no choice except to comply. And the result – we loved it! E-filing was much more efficient than printing and mailing the tax returns, saving us both time and money.

The pandemic was just such a jolt, one that was totally unexpected and touched every part of our lives. For CSTC, it threatened the very core of our existence – continuing education delivered through chapter meetings and the Summer Symposium. But our Board helped us meet the challenge by embracing virtual education. And the result is we have had more education reaching more people than ever before and a huge influx of new members.

As we come out of the pandemic, we’re facing a new set of challenges. This change was expected, but there are still so many unknowns. The world we knew has changed. Like it or not, fair or not, the reality is that things have changed. And they will never go back to what they were before.

So, what to do? I like the quote from Socrates: The secret of change is to focus all of your energy not on fighting the old, but on building the new. As we go forward, let’s not fight to keep things the same as they’ve always been, but rather let’s look at the opportunities that lie ahead.

How can we incorporate the best parts of our pre-pandemic existence into today’s post-pandemic reality? We’ve been jolted out of our comfort zone; now let’s work together to build on what we have, to forge a new and stronger reality, and make CSTC the best it’s ever been!

Linda Dong, EA
CSTC President

2021 CSTC Member of the Year

This year’s Member of the Year is a person who is passionate towards the things he cares about – his family, his profession, his church, and CSTC.

In his professional life, in addition to running and expanding his practice, he puts an enormous amount of energy into providing legal education via his radio shows, e-books, and educational seminars for his clients, his professional community, and the general public. His passion for the law and helping others navigate it is awesome.

In his free time, he actively participates in church activities. He is very active in the Young Men Program, mentoring teenage boys. During Covid, he found ways to keep them engaged, using activities such as rock climbing, hiking, bike riding and water skiing. He is also on the board of Gently Hugged, a program to provide disadvantaged new mothers with the clothing and supplies needed for a baby’s first year of life.

He brings the same enthusiasm and passion to CSTC, where he is willing to hold any position that helps to promote CSTC and move it forward. He served as chapter president twice as well as Society President. He is always ready to listen to suggestions from members on how to improve Society. Most recently he served as Society President for second time, 20 years after his first time. As President, he willingly and enthusiastically travelled up and down the state to meet with chapters, to be their speaker, and to help them transition to virtual meetings. He supports and encourages each member with enthusiasm and genuine care. And he inspires us each month with his President’s Report in the newsletter.

Our Member of the Year for 2021 is Gary Quackenbush.
