President's Column

18…19…20!  I relax my arms and put down the weights. I grab a sip of water and then start the next set. Lunge and twist, plank taps, chest press. And on. And on. And on.

I’m in the gym working out with my new trainer, Ingrid. I had been training twice a week for several years when the pandemic hit. At first the gyms were closed. Then they opened, but I wasn’t comfortable with being indoors. So I worked out at home, and it was okay.

Eventually, two years passed, I was vaccinated and boosted, but I still hadn’t gone back to the gym. I was still exercising at home, but somehow the intensity was fading. It was becoming easier and easier to shorten or put off the time to exercise. So finally I made the call and signed up again for sessions with a trainer.  And once again, those familiar sensations return – sweat, exhaustion, sore muscles, along with satisfaction and a sense of accomplishment.

The best part is that I have more energy and the desire to move. I keep my desk in the standing position more often. I work in the garden. I walk my dog. And, surprisingly, I’m energized to work! I move to finish those tax returns that have been languishing. And I begin to address those little tasks I keep putting off. I feel my procrastinating tendencies decreasing. And it feels good!

As I continue to exercise, I begin to see some results in addition to the increased energy – less soreness, more flexibility, and more strength. But the best compliment comes from my grandson. He and his sister are playing together, seeing who is the strongest. My grandson comes up to me and says, “Let me feel your muscles, Grandma.” I gamely flex my biceps and let him feel. “Wow! Grandma’s hard!” he says. I’m surprised and pleased. All my hard work has paid off!

Then my granddaughter puts it in perspective. “Grandma,” she states, “has cranberry sauce muscles.” I look at her quizzically. “What in the world are cranberry sauce muscles?” She explains, “Some parts are hard, but most of it is soft!” LOL! Out of the mouth of babes….

May you also enjoy energy, strength, and the refreshing honesty of children!
