Forosophobia?

Forosophobia – the fear of taxes and the IRS. Really? Turns out it’s a real, if recent, term to describe the tax time dread experienced by many people. In February, 2021, Dr. Dale Hartley wrote an article about the “existential dread evoked by tax reporting and the Internal Revenue Service.” While many people dislike taxes, and procrastination and anxiety are widespread, some people are so traumatized by the ordeal of preparing tax returns that it’s actually a phobia.

It turns out there’s not much scholarly literature about tax phobia, and, not surprisingly, the most credible commentary comes from attorneys and accountants who deal with these fearful clients and their tax issues.

Dr. Hartley writes, ” Given that tax trepidation and IRS aversion are generally recognized phenomena, and further, that sufficient anecdotal evidence exists to establish that such fear produces phobic reactions in some people, I submit that there is sufficient cause to name the phobia. Accordingly, I offer forosophobiaas the name for the fear of taxes and the IRS. “Foros” is the Greek word for “tax,” and “phobia” of course comes from the Greek word for “fear.”

So now we have a name for it. Fortunately, few of our clients actually have a phobia about taxes. Phobia means excessive fear, one that can evoke panic attacks, paralysis of action, hyperventilation, and other physical symptoms. Still, we see some hints of it – clients who refuse to open letters from the IRS, clients feeling extreme stress, and even tears.

But mostly our clients come to us as an antidote, or, perhaps, an inoculation against forosophobia. Explaining the tax law in easy-to-understand language and helping them know what to expect goes a long way toward relieving anxiety. Setting up estimated payments to avoid a huge tax bill next April or a payment plan to pay off that huge tax bill can help our clients manage their stress. We can offer reassurance that audits are rare, and that should one happen, we can help or find someone to help them through it. Mistakes do happen, but we can assure them they won’t be going to jail. There may be penalties, but often we can get them waived as well.

In the midst of so much stress and anxiety, we really do make an onerous task – filing a tax return – much less onerous. And hopefully prevent some forosophobia as well.
