Tax Season Survival Revisited

I recently came across an article I wrote in 2004 entitled “49 Tips for Tax Season Survival.” That surprised me. Not that the article was about tips – you already know I like tips – but that there were 49! I stated that I was tired of the general tax season tips – eat well, exercise and relax – so I made my own list. I had two criteria for my list: 1) the tip had to be very specific, small steps towards the goal as it were, and 2) there had to be a lot of tips. The more tips there are, the more likely one is going to fit your situation.

Now, however, as I read it over, a list of 49 tips seems way too long. It takes too much time even to read through them. So I’ve reconsidered my list. Too many of the tips were still about eating well and exercising. So instead I decided to just pick my favorites – the ones that catch my attention and make me smile, or that make me resolve to try it.

So here is my revised list of Eight Tips for Tax Season Survival:

1.     When your client leaves, close the door and do 10 jumping jacks. Then open the door and continue as usual.
2.     Some clients are just plain unpleasant. Fire them! It’s not worth the energy drain.
3.     Block out – and take! – a one-hour lunch break every day.
4.     Put out a bowl of nuts in the shell and a nutcracker.
5.     Ice cubes make a glass of water more appealing.
6.     Ask one of your employees to cut up some fruit and bring it to every desk in the late afternoon.
7.     Resolve to take one night off during tax season and go to a concert, asporting event, or someplace fun.
8.     Always keep in mind this one pertinent fact: This too shall pass!

Have a safe, healthy, and prosperous tax season!
